Re: Subject: Re: Finding Places To Speak
I recently was approached by two garden clubs to do custom talks for each of
them. There subjects were not similar. The prep time for each would be well
beyond the cost even billing it out at minimum wage. Both Were not to be
charged expenses e.g. mileage. Eventually they both backed out. I came to
the conclusion along time ago that public speaking is a non returning
activity except as a marketing tool to expand my radio listenership. Another
Gardening Writer friend was offered to do a talk. For a hour talk he charges
$1000 plus expenses. He finds that this chases away the most unwanted
requests. Another Garden Writer posts his rates on his website. A 45 to 50
minute power point presentation, and a Q & A for about 15 minutes. Costs
$3,500 within the Greater Toronto Area. And $4,500 outside of the GTA.
$6,000 for two presentations in the same day. These prices include taxes,
travel etc. Years ago I asked the GWAA to do a compensation survey of Radio
Garden Writer. I do not think it happened. This string indicates that there
is a real need for us to communicate with each other about wages and
expectations. The very fact that Cathy charged $75 25 years ago is an
indication that wages have not kept up with the times.
