Re: Hawaii bound
CTHAR (College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources) at the
University of Hawaii runs an active Master Gardner program (
http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/uhmg/)
Their Urban Garden Center in Perl City: (http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ougc/)
is a fascinating place to visit.
The University of Hawaii Manoa campus has many interesting plants and
offers tours: http://www.museum.hawaii.edu/collections/uhm_plants.php
and:

I'm not sure there are any non-Dole pineapple plantations left on Oahu,
although there may be some on Maui. The Dole visitor center on Oahu is
well worth visiting though. It also includes one of the worlds largest
garden mazes.
Other sites of interest on Oahu:
Lyon Arboretum (http://www.hawaii.edu/lyonarboretum/)
Foster Botanical Garden (http://www1.honolulu.gov/parks/hbg/fbg.htm)
There is a book available on Amazon: "A Pocket Guide to Hawaii's Botanical
Gardens" that lists most of the botanical gardens in the state.
There is also a list here: http://www.garden-info.org/wiki/Botanical_Gardens
Kawamoto Orchid Nursery is a large family run opreation. Its a beautiful
site and worth visiting: http://www.kawamotoorchids.com/
Hawaii Plantation Village is also an interesting place for the history of
sugar planations: http://www.hawaiiplantationvillage.org/
Most of the coffee plantations are on the Big Island (Hawaii), and I'm not
sure if there are any on Oahu.
