Re: tulip poplars

I have a love/hate relationship with the huge tulip poplar in front of my house.
I love the look of it, and its beautiful yellow flowers in spring/early summer.
I hate how it constantly sheds small branches on my cars.
I love that Baltimore orioles nest in it most years.
I hate its countless seeds.
I love the shade it provides.
I hate the sap bombs that glue my car windows shut and cement my wipers to my windshield.

I'm not a glutton for punishment, I simply have no other place to park.
It's a beautiful thing, and it's the messiest damned tree you can grow.

GWL: The following from the Biltmore Estate who do not bother with anything
that causes additional expenditures:
"Asheville, NC--January 2004
On April 13, 1895, Biltmore Estate Landscape Supervisor James Gall, Jr.,
reported that the alleà of 52 tulip polar trees leading up to the front of
Biltmore House in Asheville, NC, had been planted. By April 3, 2004, the
current landscape staff plans to have completed the planting of 52 new,
young trees replacing the deteriorating alleà and restoring the landscape's
historic appearance. The project to preserve Landscape Architect Frederick
Law Olmsted's original design began January 5, 2004, and will be completed
in time for Festival of Flowers, which begins April 4, 2004. In addition to
replacing the trees, the roadway running along both sides of the Front Lawn
will be widened to return it to its historic width with granite curbing
replacing existing concrete curbs."

Over the years 32 were left intact but some had suffered storm damage and
were outgrowing the ground allotted to them so the above action was taken.

Jefferson used the trees to great effect when planning Poplar Forest, his
retreat outside of Lynchburg, Va.
