Re: published in additional market
As a long-time editor who hated to meet with writers in person and never had time to do it anyway, I'd have to disagree with the advice to invite the editor to coffee, etc. If your relationship with the editor leads you to think that he or she would enjoy a morning coffee meeting, or has them often, then go ahead. Otherwise, you risk getting turned down in the beginning and off to a bad (and slow) start.

I'll second Donna's request. I could use some for my annual Garden trip...not picky
on the garden subject...:-)
Thanks!

This website tracks free e-books on Amazon. The books are typically only
free for one or two days, so you have to check the site daily or subscribe
to their RSS feed.
I've found a number of free gardening e-books over the last few months
although the quality varies greatly.

Thanks, James. Today there's a free ebook on marketing your book on that fkb.me site you just mentioned, and the advice seems good. I just got a copy.
A few weeks ago I put up a free copy of my new ebook of Nellie Neal's "Questions and Answers for Deep South Gardeners, Second Edition" as a promotion for a couple of days. Nellie and I had hundreds of takers. After the free period was over there were just a couple of sales of the ebook and the softcover, and I can't tell whether or not they were related to the promotion. We were hoping for some new reviews but didn't get any. It was fun, though, seeing the book rise to the top of the regional book category in "sales."

Hello, wise and experienced writers!
I really need some help with a very sticky situation. The editor I write for (a relationship of nearly 10 years) has several publications under his control. My regular monthly column goes into just one of them that covers about 15,000 homes in Northwest CT. My most recent paid column on "Gifts for the Gardener" went in as requested and expected. However, I just found out today that he also used the column with photos (Noel, the Cobra Head photo made it!) for another publication which reaches an even larger geography. Of course, I'm pleased that my work is getter wider viewing, however, I'm not so excited that this wasn't discussed with me, especially as it relates to compensation.
Obviously, I don't want to poison the well since I'd like to keep this writing gig. On the other hand, I also don't want my editor to think that he can get my work for free so to speak. I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone may have, especially if this is something that's to be expected or if you've had similar experiences. Is this something I should mention in gratitude or ignore or tactfully probe for additional comp or ????
Thanks, as always.

Lorraine, when this happened to me once (parties to remain nameless!), I sent a polite inquiry. That is, I *asked* instead of accusing/coming on miffed...although as we all know, 'miffed' is not always easy to detect in an email. I received a hasty apology. It was "an oversight...I was in a hurry, didn't want to miss the opportunity," and "yes, of course, you are entitled to additional compensation." And lo, in due course, I got a bit more money.
Worth a try. May your ending be happy as well.

Lorraine,
Are you close in distance to this editor so that you might ask to meet him/her for coffee shortly after the New Year? If possible I would have this conversation face to face. Second best would be a phone call. Don't, however, do this by email.
I'd spell it out to the editor, over coffee or lunch that you pay for, and say just what you said here: 1. You value the work with him/her and want it to continue. 2. You're flattered and pleased that he used it in this other venue. 3. Are there opportunities for you to help him ( /emphasis here on solving his problems and helping with his editorial needs/) in the future. and 4. You want to know from him how this larger audience will be compensated.
If I were you I'd come in with a proposal that has some specifics: "I'd love to be compensated at the rate of XYZ for the use of my work in this larger market, but what did you have in mind?"
all the best for this uncharted Mayan Calendar II and beyond,
C.L.

Hi, Lorraine -- you don't say if you have a contract with the newspaper. If there's no contract the copyright remains with you. I think C.L.'s suggestion is great...I will tell you that I did give The Indianapolis Star/Gannett rights to republish my columns without additional compensation if I could keep the copyright, and the Star agreed. At the time, I was hoping to syndicate the column simultaneously in other Indiana papers, which never happened. But it does allow me to publish my columns at the hoosiergardener.com early in the day of when they appear in the paper.
Still, even with the contract, it's messy. My contract allows for one-time use of the photos and I frequently see them show up in other Gannett publications or to illustrate features that I'm not involve with. I bill them for each photo I find and the Star pays. A bigger issue is that people can buy photos that run with stories off of the Indy Star's Website...sometimes my photos are offered for sale. I call the photo editor and tell him he can't do that. At one point, he asked if I could come down and id all my photos so they'd know not to sell them. I told him it was his job to make sure it doesn't happen, not me. I was so pissed...for crying out loud the Star and Gannett are HUGE media companies they should figure out how to keep track of this stuff so they are not breaking agreements and using photos (or stories) without permission.
Please keep us posted.
