Although I haven't followed up, I did research trademarking something and 
found the federal web site very helpful www.uspto.gov...

I would say that Jeff's comments are good for trademarking something that is 
simliar to one already registered, however, if your's was unique...such as 
the nansternam corp., then you might be able to do it on your own. The filing 
fees are $300 to $500. If I used an attorney, I would recommend someone 
knowledgeable about intellectual property rights, etc.

Also, you might check with California's secretary of state's office to see 
about registering your trademark at the state level first, which is usually a 
lot less expensive, least gets the process going and offers some protection 
in your state.
