Let me start by saying that I'm a fan of both these folks - Chris is
running some great lists and Donna has a premium website. What they are
doing is fantastic for the gardening community. This note is not and should
not be seen as a cut against either.
My own experience with static html versus database driven content
management systems is that the database systems are infinitely
superior. Using a database to search for markets - for example, listing
all the magazines by pay rate (so you write for the ones that pay the most)
rather than title is a wonderful idea. :-)) If you want a geographical
listing (all the regional magazines in the Mid-West) because you have a
relevant article, database driven listings will give you this without
having to scroll through the entire list and search the address of each
listing. A database system useage is only limited by your imagination on
how to use it.
Updating a database system is also much easier. I'm currently updating my
html web site and it is NOT database driven. Don't ask whether I'm
enjoying the time searching for broken or out-of-date links. By contrast,
when I have to update my other database driven site - its a pretty simply
thing to do. A few key-strokes and the entire website changes shape, form,
colour or use.
Personally - my vote would go to database driven sites. Just my .02
