We have never had problems with them destroying grass,
although we live in 'Japanese beetle country': probably
because we let our grass alone, i.e., we don't fuss with it,
we don't use insecticides, we let it get too long, etc.

Now I can tell people that we're not lazy, we're just using
a natural Japanese beetle control measure! <g>

But I have had (minor) problems with the adults eating
plants. Last year, they did some minor damage to the basil
growing in containers on our front porch. I went out early
in the mornings and tapped them into a coffee can of water,
and got rid of most of them that way.
