Re: A Summation On Japanese Beetles

I have really enjoyed the discussion about Japanese beetles. I have no idea what they are but assume they are what we call African black beetles, i.e. the ones that are a fat curled grub in the larval stage, with a greyish head, up to about an inch long, under the ground, especially in lawns and turf. I also get them in container grown plants.

Yes, I think this is a good point Duane, however, are you aware that of the billions of tons of biocides that we spray annually on home gardens and agricultural crops, approximately 1 per cent reaches the target organism?

Whenever I find those beetles I throw them on to the paths for the birds. I have a native "wilderness" zone that replaced the original lawns around the property where I rarely go (not even to water) and where the local wildlife can live in peace in their own space. If you don't have something like this, and until more of us do, the "pests" will just migrate in from the neighbour's place.

I also enjoyed Dan's piece very much. The problem suggests the solution - less lawns, less problems - biodiversity is the key. Longer grass though, as Dan suggested, also uses less water.
