Re: A Summation On Japanese Beetles
Some great information here on Japanese Beetles. We have very few on our 1.3
acres where we use almost no chemicals. We do keep the lawn high and invite
as many beneficial insects as possible.
Evening primrose have been chewed to pieces here and I'm not sure it's from
the Japanese Beetles, by the way, the Oenothera tetragona grows surprisingly
well in a shaded, root bound area and the yellow splash is wonderful in that
location.
Oenothera "Cold Crick" is an excellent addition to the perennial garden. Not
at all like other sundrops, it stays nicely in a clump and doesn't run willy
nilly all over the place. A low grower, it looks fabulous along those oh so
popular stacked stone walls.
When I first moved here a friend called me and told me she had a pink
evening primrose that she had purchased just two years earlier. I had shared
many plants from my previous garden with her and she wanted to reciprocate
with this one. It should have been an instant warning when she brought me
two cases loaded with Oenothera speciosa "Rosea". But no... I went ahead and
planted this baby right smack in the middle of a daylily display bed.
Eight years later after pulling, digging, yanking and so on, "Rosea" has
finally come into her own. She's moved herself a full 15' from the original
planting site to situate herself right along a gravel driveway. With Salvia
lyrata "Purple Knockout", low growing Sedums and golden Oregano, "Rosea" is
a smash and has finally found a home.
