Re: Private archives

In this case, the idea is more to keep the archives private to keep spammers from harvesting addresses. Very true that anything we write stays in cyberspace for unknowable lengths of time, but at least if the list is restricted to members, we have a reasonable chance of tracking down any unauthorized use of material.
As I say, though, the first reason for private archives is to block spamming of the list members.

I think it's a moot point and really unimportant because
nothing sent to an email list is ever really private anyway.

There's no way you as list owner (or anyone else) can
prevent a list member from copying one or more messages and
doing what he/she will with them - sending them to a
newsgroup, putting them on a website: whatever. (Yes,
copyright applies but is essentially unenforceable on the
Internet, which is world wide.)

I think it's a good idea for list members to remember this.

Never write anything you wouldn't want distributed to the
world: e.g., never say you've done something illegal, never
criticize your boss or spouse on an email list, etc.
