Since the Schmeiser case has been such a lynchpin to this discussion, I
thought I should look into it. According to the organic types, this poor
victimized organic farmer had his canola crop contaminated by a neighbor's
Roundup Ready canola. Then he was further oppressed by having Monsanto sue
him. (And winning.)
Here are the facts from the court records. The nearest Rountup Ready canola
field was five miles away. How some of Schmeiser's field became
"contaminated" is unknown. What is known is that this "organic" farmer
sprayed a small portion of his crop -- the portion that he knew had been
"contaminated"? -- with Roundup and then saved the seed from the surviving
plants for his following year's planting. The court determined, quite
rationally, that he was intentionally saving (stealing?) Roundup Ready seed.
As a poster boy for organic victimization by GM crops, Schmeiser seems to be
just a tad compromised. Not that it matters to those who want to believe.
