Re: digital cameras / beware lowest prices
And somewhat apropos for new camera purchasers, here's an article in
yesterday's New York Times about the myth of megapixels.
http://hort.net/+1i9t
The gist of the article is in this paragraph:
A megapixel is one million tiny colored dots in a photo. It seems
logical that more megapixels would mean a sharper photo. In truth,
though, it could just mean a terrible photo made of more dots. A
camera's lens, circuitry and sensor -- not to mention your mastery
of lighting, composition and the camera's controls -- are far more
important factors.
Something else to remember is that a camera with 10 megapixels sounds
like a lot more than a camera with 6 megapixels. But in reality, here
are the image sizes:
6 megapixel: 3000x2000
10 megapixel: 3865x2589
The image is only 25% larger (approximately) for four megapixels more.
For a beginner, a smaller camera might be the best thing. My recommendation
would be to buy a Nikon D70, a large memory card, and some good lenses.
You'll still get the megapixels that you need, and if you decide that you
need a better camera you can upgrade to a D200 at a later date your lenses
and memory cards will still transfer over.
