Re: Website software

I have to warn people about using the easy website-making software provided
on hosting sites. It is better to buy a program and learn it. Which one? Who
knows!!

About eight years ago I signed up with Hostway and used their quick and easy
no html interface and put up whatever words and pictures I wanted. All was
well for two years until they decided to update their program. I rebuilt my
site and that was good for another two years. Then they took down that
site-builder program too, replacing it with a version that would not even
let me make a site with the same page names-- a sure way to lose your Google
traffic. Tech support advised me to use my own software.

In May 2006 I bought Adobe CreativeSuite2 which was expensive but includes
professional versions of Photoshop, Acrobat, InDesign, and more, including
GoLive, their program for making websites. I use most of the other programs
in the suite. Now there's CreativeSuite4 out there.

I'm not so bad at these things but I couldn't make head or tail of GoLive
until I bought a "For Dummies" book and locked myself into my office for
three days of the Fourth of July weekend.

Eventually my California programmer son Al came home for a visit and looked
things over. His verdict was that Adobe's GoLive was a good program but had
stupidly hidden all its power and tools in a complicated way.

I don't like GoLive but I still use it and do my site without too much pain.
I received a notice from Adobe that GoLive has been replaced with something
else.

I still use Hostway. They still offer some kind of easy site builder but it
too will eventually be replaced, leaving its users stranded -- but not me.
Never again.
