Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 121, Issue 24

I agree with you, Jo Ellen -- common names of plants Âshould be lower case. But then we get sentences like this:

"Spring-flowering shrubs that may be pruned once bloom is completed include lilac ( Syringa spp.), pieris, daphne, azalea, rhododendron, spirea, forsythia, spring-flowering viburnum, weigela, flowering quince ( Chaenomeles spp.), red twig dogwood ( Cornus spp.) and deutzia."

Is this "right" or just more confusing?

I've always liked Johnson Nursery, but the service this time just blew me
away. I ordered on Tuesday morning at 10:30, received an email from them
that they were packing the order a little after noon for shipping on
Wednesday. The box arrived Thursday afternoon! The plants are healthy and
very large. The blueberries are very well branched.

No, it's the one I mentioned before. ÂIt's in Ellijay, GA.

I have a question about common names. Think print, in newspapers and magazines, most of which have an aversion to too much fancy stuff in text:

Should common names be capitalized, such as Lilac or Sweet Potato Vine? I say no, because these are not proper names.

Next, what if you are writing about Hosta or other plants, where the scientific and a common name are the same. Should all hosta, petunia, impatiens, etc., references as a common names be cap or cap and Italics or can they be lower case?

I agree, Jo Ellen. No caps on common names unless it is actually part of the name. For example: The boy George vs Boy George. But an AP Stylebook expert can better direct us.

Thanks, Suzy. I have an AP style guide and common names would not be upper case, but so many garden writers and hort people use caps for common names and that's why I was trying to see what the thinking was.

ÂHi Jo Ellen,

I also find this issue very frustrating, but I don't have a rule to
offer. I usually work around the problem either by rewording the sentence
content or how I'm naming the plants, so that I can make them either all
uppercase or all lowercase. I find the uc/lc usage in the same sentence
annoying and distracting in someone else's writing because I then feel
compelled to try to figure out what rule THEY used!

Regards,
Lois

Quick example of what I would do.

The hosta looks great at your place. (common name)

Lady X's garden contains rare Hosta cultivars.? (Botanical name even without the species name.)
