Re: [GWL]: new topic?

English spelling has always been all over the map. Ben Jonson is supposed to
have said something like: "It is a dull man indeed, who can only spell a
word one way."

As for usage, it constantly changes and the language evolves whether we like
it or not. Complaints about the deterioration of English as as old as the
language itself. And hasn't the way we use language been a marker of class
for eons?

Thing is, English, like all languages, is a living thing that changes over
time. So, at what point does common usage become proper? If everybody does
it, is it then correct? Or do we have to wait until some authority
(Webster--OED---Funk & Wagnals) declares the change to be official? If they
all use "over," and we insist on "more than," don't they start to think of
us as boring snobs?
