We are lucky to have the Guardian newspaper in the UK. They have so many typos
that it is now affectionately known as the Gruniad.

But there is too much reliance upon spell & grammar checkers. Quite a lot of
the examples of what could be poor grammar are often due to the spellchecker
accepting the wrong word. And pressure of deadlines prevents those working on
newspapers having the time to check properly what they've written.

I feel that it is possible to be too pedantic about grammar if you are writing
in a colloquial, conversational tone. But there are three books which
should be
on all our shelves:
Fowler's Guide to the use of English - that may not be the correct title as
somebody borrowed my copy and it hasn't been returned! (I suspect a daughter
during her degree studies.)
The English Way - Henderson
The Oxford Guide to English Usage.

But as my spell & grammar checkers have the alternatives of English (US),
English (Canadian), English (UK), English (International), I'm not sure which
standards could, or should, apply? Perhaps English mid-Atlantic?

Cheers
