Re: [GWL]: new topic?

It's my understanding that "decimate" traditionally and linguistically
relates to the destruction of one in ten. Usage takes years to learn and is
always changing.

On another tack, my son Al, as a teenager a few years back, was a bad
speller but a good musician. He began to use a spell-checker that made a
beep as soon as it detected an error, even with the writer still hitting the
keyboard. In his strenuous efforts to avoid that sound, he learned to spell
properly, at least as far as the spell checker was able to take him. In case
you're wondering, it was a giant step forward.

Now, Margaret, what have you against decimate...I've always liked the
sound of that word, which, according to my dictionary means " to
destroy a great number or proportion of"; so in the right context, it
would be a valid use I should think....I'm curious??
