So true.  Also, some publishers allow authors to buy their own books at
half-cost.  The added incentive for people to buy the book from you is that
they get a signed copy.

On speaker's fees: I charge for-profit groups and shows $500 + costs.
Non-profit groups can negotiate that down, and I speak to local garden clubs
within a 25-mile radius for free or $25 or less (depends on their custom and
the number of members).  I also try to "bundle" speaking engagements.  For
example, if I have to go to California for a talk, I'll try to find some
other work on the west coast, too.
