There are always conferences and symposia looking for speakers, and many -- 
including some surprisingly large ones -- will negotiate very hard to keep 
fees at a minimum.  Why?  To save their members money, of course, and also so 
they have enough to pay the big name speakers, the sure draws.  
Public speaking can pay off in all the ways already explored: Exposure, book 
sales, good publicity for your business, contacts, and/or money.  Know what 
you need out of the experience and be sure you get it.  Your time and 
expertise ARE valuable... otherwise, they wouldn't have contacted you, right?
