That Timber Press book on purple plums Lon mentioned, was written by Arthur Lee Jacobson, who is a great writer about trees. His book, "North American Landscape Trees" (Ten Speed Press), is one of the very finest and probably the most useful  book I own on the subject.

Timber Press is mainly for the person who is a fanatic on one plant and can produce a definitive work on it, but doesn't care about money, just getting their "baby" into print.  They do very small print runs, though they produce quality books with lots of photos and attractive layout.  If you are a serious author, don't bother with them.  If you have the ultimate book on one plant, they will do a beautiful job.   
It can backfire on them, though.  They did a book on purple leaved plums that sold about 50 copies.  Beautifully done book, though.  Never thought there were that many varieties of purple leaved plums.
