I certainly didn't imply that in my post. I was merely showing the reality of how writers are paid---or, in a specific circumstance, not paid.

In my experience, any negative feelings result from the author not having read, or understood the contract. Thus, the book sells for 20 bucks, and they think their royalty is based on that, when the contract clearly stated net.

Something else to be aware of. Most publishers figure royalties on final sales. That is, when they get paid, you get paid. Final sales are not the same as sales, because returns and certain discounts have to be back-figured.

Again, I'm not implying that this is illegitimate, unethical, or sub-rosa. It's just the way things are, and authors need to be aware of it.
