Re: Re: potential problem with the potential problem
Dear all,
This discussion has been fascinating. I stick doggedly, perhaps unrealistically, to film and will stay there until the quality is matched and the technology stabilized.
One comment in the discussion bothered me:
"...it has been a good thing for me to find
that I can still get the latest specialty plant images as digital
files from websites, often without even having to ask."
Sorry but this is flat-out wrong. If a site indicates that images may be freely used without obtaining prior permission, borrow away. Otherwise using anyone's images without permission is tantamount to theft. Giving a credit line does not excuse the use and should be considered a "thank-you" to the photographer that granted you permission to borrow their work.
I give many presentations--until now using ONLY my own slides. This February, for the first time, I am supplementing my pictures with the work of others. Each source is being asked for permission and only after it is granted (for this one-time use and no other) am I getting the image. In my case it's also important because some of the photographers are being asked to email hi-res images. Often pictures from the web are not good enough quality to project.
I do a fair amount of free-lance photography/writing and am highly sensitive about the rights that I sell--and consequently about the rights of others engaged in these creative endeavors.
