Re: exposure of dark/light plants

Pat Meadows wrote: I would like to ask a question here. I presently have a cheap digital camera - not only cheap, but also about four years old, which is old in the digital world - there have been many improvements in the last four years, I believe.

I'm having trouble with the digital camera in regard to contrast: it doesn't handle light and darkness well at all. I think I'm using the right words here (I hope so). For instance, I cannot get a decent photograph of a dark plant, or a very light plant. I can't even get a usable photograph of a very dark plant.

Whether digital or film (and digital's contrast range is very similar to slide film -- you don't have as much leeway as you do with print film), for dark or light plants you need to adjust your exposure. Most well-featured cameras have exposure compensation dials or buttons. For a dark subject, you have to underexpose by one or two stops (or half stops). For a light subject -- snow or white flowers -- you have to overexpose by a stop or two.

And, yes, four years is a long time in the digital world. You will get better results and a lot more control with a well-featured SLR-like digicam or a digital SLR. They do a much better job than the older digital point & shoots, not to mention that they'll have better resolution. Have a look at the newer cameras that are out now. www.dpreview.com is a great site for reviewing digital cameras, from digicams to digital SLRs.
