Re: Determining a plant's provenance?

Thanks for your suggestions, Pat and Kate, I'll definitely look into them.

Sorry for being so cryptic as far as what plant I'm trying to track. Playing it close to the vest because apparently no one else is delving into this. But it's something I've been wondering about for 20 years, and this year, the first big clue literally fell into my hands in a junk shop in the middle of nowhere.

Since then, I've spent months in delicious obsession, piecing things together, until I got to the original 1800s diary kept by the person I suspect introduced the plant. After searching through just about all regions of the country for it (and having no idea whether it actually existed), the diary turned out to be at a house I can almost see from my own deck. So there's a cool feel of serendipity about the whole thing, and I feel absurdly territorial about it.

But, without the science, all I have is a great tale. Which I've been working into a historical novel (now THERE'S a humbling experience for this writer and reader---man, is it hard to write a novel!). But I'd love to trumpet it in print as fact; ergo, the genetics angle.

Thanks again for the leads. I'll definitely follow up.
-Sally
