Hi Doreen,
When you mention watermarking, are you talking about visible watermarks
(like a copyright notice in the corner or a transparent notice through
the middle) or an invisible watermark? Or both?
Visible watermarks can be added like Saxon suggests -- through Photoshop
or any other editor. I've automated the process on my systems to
place text in the lower right hand corner by just giving the script
a list of directories to convert. It runs through all of the files that
it finds and resizes, sharpens, and edits them as necessary.
Unfortunately, they're only written to work on a UNIX system.
Invisible watermarks are the type that DigiMarc and other commercial
services secretly embed in an image. It's actually called
'steganography', and refers to the practice of hiding something within
something else (in this case, hiding copyright information inside of your
image).

One other thing to remember about invisible watermarks: they degrade
the quality of the image depending on the amount of data that's
stored and how 'robust' you want it to be. A good example is at

There's a good list of commercial software at

I'm not sure what free software is available for Windows, but I can
look into it if there's enough interest.
