Hi Ellen,

I guess I don't really know if I DO need an agent or not...it is my first 
book.  I have a friend who has written several books--he has an agent, and 
suggested I get one, too, for all the reasons you listed.  Predictably, I 
did contact his agent, who just felt that my subject matter was not the type 
of garden book she prefers to represent.

So now, I guess, the question is:  Do I really NEED an agent, and if so, 
HELP!  It's new territory for so many of us, as we've already seen.

Forgive my naivité, but what makes you (all) want/need an agent
instead of shopping a book idea yourself?

I can think of several reasons (an agent has better connections, an
author might dislike making the actual sales pitch, an author might
have limited time), but as someone who worked with an agent
constantly in my first career, I haven't felt the need or desire to
do so yet as a writer, so I'm curious.  Is it worth it?
