agent anyone?

I published my first book, Earthly Delights: Gardening by the Seasons the Easy Way (Taylor Trade Publishing, 2004) without an agent but have decided to get an agent's help with my second book.

Rather than sending out 20 proposals as I did with ED, I will mail five or six query letters and see what happens. Instead of waiting around for publishers' responses, I can work on my projects while my agent shops my book and represents my interests. An agent has contacts and savvy I do not have and that is what I'm willing to pay for.

I guess the biggest reason is a matter of time - I hope to accelerate the process of both securing a contract and getting the book in print. As a woman of "a certain age" I am conscious of time (and opportunities) passing by. Marketing a book requires a whole lot of energy - and youthful energy is best.

I believe I'm a good writer - and I know I'm a crumby business person. My hope is that, with an agent, I can focus on what I enjoy and he/she can plow through the money stuff. I think of hiring an agent as an investment. I'll let you know in a couple of years. (I'll also let you know how I found an agent as soon as I do it.)
