These are all good reasons. Add to them the fact that some publishers, especially some with higher visibility will not review or accept unsolicited proposals from authors, but will from agents, especially if it's an agent they have worked with. Maybe that falls under 'better connections".

I shopped my first book around, and yes, I didn't have to share the proceeeds with an agent. Of course an agent likely would have gotten the deal in less than the 3 years and 28 rejections I went through. I also spent a fair amount of money putting together a dummy (it was a photo book so the visual impact was important), that I would have gladly given instead to an agent if it would have saved me the time I spent "learning" how to get my book onto a publisher's desk.

For me, it's the same reason I don't do my own website design, fix my own car, or plow my own driveway. I can do all those things, but they take me away from doing what I do best and get the most bang for my buck from.
