climate zones

The USDA climate zone grid is useless unless you want to know how
cold it has gotten somewhere. For plants, it's irrelevant. For
example, I used to live in the Siskiyou mountains of suthwestern
Oregon. It's in USDA zone 8. So is most of the Gulf coast. The
vegetation in those places is very different.

Jeff mentions the Sunset Western Garden book, which breaks the west
into 24 different zones. The Sunset National Garden Book divides the
country into 45 different zones, and is both very useful and highly
accurate. Every US garden writer should have one and use it.
