Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 60, Issue 10
I remember waking at dawn in a guest room at Woodbrooke, the Quaker
college in Birmingham, England, to see a squirrel painstakingly
unrolling the duct tape that a member of staff had spent half the
previous afternoon wrapping round a "squirrel proof" feeder as an
extra line of defence. He then proceeded to chew through the wire by
which it hung. As soon as it was on the ground he was joined by three
others and they made short work of removing the top. Took them about
40 minutes altogether to undo a couple of hours of human endeavour.
We had a snowy egret overfly the garden this afternoon - just before
it started to snow. I reckon bird feed should be tax deductible for
professional gardeners - bringing the birds in is a sound method of
pest control. At Sonairte we got rid of 80% of our codlin moth
population when we changed from winter feeding to year round feeding.
Alas, we discovered that we had had a resident water rail on
Christmas Eve when one of the cats slaughtered it in the sitting room.
