Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 60, Issue 10
Goodness, I thought I knew my birds pretty well, but: "and saw not one, but
two pair of
Smew. "
Never even heard of them before!
The Smew (Mergellus albellus) is a minute duck which is intermediate between
the mergansers and the goldeneyes, and has interbred with the Common
Goldeneye. It is the only member of the genus Mergellus.

Good looking little ducks!
Last April I was in the Everglades most of the month...great place to see
birds...loads of osprey, nesting right in the park parking lot,
scissortailed kites, fish crows, several kinds of buzzards, even an indigo
bunting.
Here in San Luis Obispo, CA right now: resident scrub jays, Ca. quail,
mocking birds & red shoulder hawks, Anna's hummers, Audubon finches, fox
sparrows, vireo's, an occasional house wren, and passin' through, white
crowned sparrows.
