What format do you send articles in?

Well, so much for sending my last email offlist. :) Sorry about that!
Fortunately my apology opens the door for a question, so it wasn't a
total loss.

When you write articles for magazines or articles that will appear
online, what format do they ask for your work in? What if you're
supplying pictures? Can you just send a Word document and they figure
out the layout? Or do they ask for something like RTF or DocBook?

When I started a book about a decade ago for a prominent computer book
company they only took RTF, DocBook, or nroff macros. I tried DocBook
and found it to be a royal PITA, although I suspect it has matured some.
I also suspect that garden writers use slightly less obtuse software.

Despite whatever format you have to supply now (which I'm still curious
about), what would be your dream format? What if you were supplying
photos?

I'm investigating the possibility of articles (some for pay) for a site
and want to make sure that the format we choose has the broadest appeal.

Thanks,

Chris
