small vs large plants


Here's an interesting anecdote: Years ago now the City of San Diego 
wanted instant trees around a new stadium.  The landscaping experts 
recommended planting eucalyptus saplings - cheaper than mature trees, 
and the roots would establish more quickly for a healthier specimen.  
The city insisted on mature trees.  They compromised with a mixture.  
Within about three years the young saplings pretty much caught up in 
size to the mature plants (these were fast-growing varieties), and were 
sturdier.  I forget all the details now, but they may even have lost 
some of the more expensive, bigger trees.
