small vs large plants
Here's an interesting anecdote: Years ago now the City of San Diego
wanted instant trees around a new stadium. The landscaping experts
recommended planting eucalyptus saplings - cheaper than mature trees,
and the roots would establish more quickly for a healthier specimen.
The city insisted on mature trees. They compromised with a mixture.
Within about three years the young saplings pretty much caught up in
size to the mature plants (these were fast-growing varieties), and were
sturdier. I forget all the details now, but they may even have lost
some of the more expensive, bigger trees.
Cheers,
Catriona
