 I hope that the situation with the story about Garden Design magazine will
emphasize the need to be sure of your sources before you post that really
juicy ³news² item.  There are people in cyberspace who concoct very
plausible ³news² stories based on gossip and rumor and too often those
stories get passed around without any checking.  I¹ve gotten stories with a
Reuters byline that, when I checked with Reuters, were total fabrications.
 When you get a story passed to you that seems pretty exciting, DOUBLE CHECK
IT FIRST.  If it has the byline of a news service, check with the service.
If not, go to people in the story, or who would know for certain if the
story was true or not.  Besides the fact that it will save you embarassment
if the story is false, it helps maintain the reputation of the GWL.   And it
looks pretty silly if a list devoted to writers isn¹t careful enough to
check facts before publication.
 Most importantly, if there is a repeat of this kind of thing, I would have
to make this a moderated list, so that nothing would be posted that wasn¹t
checked first.  I don¹t want to do it that way, since I believe in the
ability of the group to do the right thing, but if I must, I will.
 Also, as list owner, I¹m more or less responsible for what goes on the list
and I prefer not to have to deal with angry people when something incorrect
is posted.
