Re: The American Gardener - Gentiana

Hello Nancy,
Believe we have an editing boo-boo here. I can not think of any gentian I would place in *deep* shade here in the mid-west. Deep shade meaning something like on the north side of a evergreen. For andrewsii to bloom well it needs light. Also I have never seen it in native habitats growing in deep shade. I stick with what I wrote in the text.
My apologies for the confusion.

Gene:

Great story. But I'm confused. On page 25 of the article, you say that G. andrewsii "prefers consistent moisture but will do satisfactorily with average moisture if mulched. A site with half-shade or high, open shade is best." But on the next page the caption says that this plant "thrives in deep shade and arid soil." Is this an editing mistake? A difference of opinion?

This is important to me because I'm always on the lookout for plants that will do okay in dry, intense shade.
