Re: Jap Beetle Report from SW CT
Hello, you crazy bug watchers!
Here's my sorry report...
After spending most of June and early July hunting slugs (so disgusting, I can't even discuss that!), I am now earnestly going after Japanese and Asian beetles. They arrived about 10 days later than usual, but their numbers are now at what I would say normal as the ambient temperatures have risen to their normal July ranges, although blessedly short of 90 degrees. Slugs are still numerous, however, and appear in very high numbers as soon as we have even the slightest rain so that chore doesn't seem to have an end to it at all. And the lily leaf beetle just goes on eating, mating, and producing one generation after the other. So they all get to swim in the same soapy water bath as their final activity.
On this morning's hunt, however, I found two good critters: one preying mantis and a parasitized tomato hornworm. I'm hoping there are others that I missed but it's heartening to know that the good guys are here for the feast. Hooray!!
This is indeed one of the most unusual growing seasons I have experienced on many levels. Much to capture in journals and "on film" and many lessons to be learned.
