Re: BBC and US gardening

From: "Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp"
I don't get to watch any of the BBC garden programs, but on PBS, we have
Brits and Aussies telling Americans how to garden on Victory Garden.
I started serious gardening under Bob Thompson's television tutelage. When
he died I actually shed tears. I have shed more tears, but only
metaphorically, as I watched Victory Garden "progress." It is not worth
watching now.
I am sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that
there are no decent gardening shows on television now. By decent, I mean
something that encourages gardening, not just the very minimal information
on decorating a yard. A show that inspires proto-gardeners to reach further.
A show that demonstrates actual hands on techniques beyond digging a hole
and plunking a plant in. A show that tells you how to plant marigolds and
tomatoes, of course, but also inspires new gardeners to stretch into new
areas, something beyond the six packs that fill the big box stores' parking
lots.
Too many gardeners pick up plants because they have grown them, or their
grandmothers have. I want a show that inspires new gardeners to see a plant
in a nursery and say, "I've never grown that; I want it."
