Re: Fall Planting

Daryl,
In Southern California, and to some extent in much of northern Calif,
except for areas north of San Francisco, we do a great deal of planting in the
fall. We start around late September when we think it is fall, and continue
on through December, when we think winter has arrived. We plant trees,
shrubs, annuals, perennials, bulbs, and many edibles which do well in the
cooler weather.

However, truth of the matter is, we plant all year long, since the spring
season stretches into summer, the summer into fall, and the fall into what
we call winter. Unofficially, in Southern California, winter is December and
January, a time when nights get down into the mid to high 30s and low 40s.
The rest of the year we can plant almost anything anytime, but experienced
gardeners know to separate out what does best in what season. Mountain
areas here follow much the same planting schedule as in northern, frigid
climates.
