Re: Fall Planting

Daryl et al,

I'm in western Ct, zone 5-6 and yes, we plant in the fall: trees, shrubs, and perennials. Our season is roughly from Labor Day when kids return to school until mid-November at the very latest in a mild fall. Our ground freezes usually by about December 1 and those roots need the better part of 6 weeks to get going so the recommendation is that a gardener try to work the calendar to accommodate that timetable.

I work at a garden center that grows most of their own shrubs (their own brand as well as Proven Winners, etc.) and perennials so the stock is pretty fresh and isn't just the left overs from the spring/summer season. We have a very vibrant bulb season that encourages planting perennials as "foliage foils" and the sales are brisk for all 3 types of plants the entire fall season.
