My newspaper column of 15 years was cut this year by one quarter - formerly 4 questions per week, now 3. They pay me the same, so I did get this one raise, after 15 years. This assignment is what remains of a formerly vibrant, weekly HG tabloid. In those days, I also wrote features and had a photographer at my disposal or got paid for my photos. No more. Newspapers are worth it for visibility, and for the drawers full of actual letters (handwritten, with postage) that will no doubt be on 'Antiques Roadshow' when my future grandchildren finally clean out the attic in 2090.
I do find that the limit of 3 questions per week has geometrically increased the number of questions I cannot answer in the paper. I have taken to gathering the week's questions into topics, like tomato problems or lawn issues, so I can print one question that answers several inquiries. As one of the 'over 50' crowd, I have to grudgingly admit that we now live in the short attention span era of communication. I'll admit the limits make me a more concise writer, but it is a bit more work.
As to POD, I am a disciple of Betty's and agree that the books are there when I need them!
