Re: Article length

My newspaper column of 15 years was cut this year by one quarter -
formerly 4 questions per week, now 3. They pay me the same, so I did get
this one raise, after 15 years.
Yeah, tell me about it. I started writing a column for a regional seniors
magazine some fourteen years ago, picked up several national awards for it
including the only gold Mature Media Award the mag has ever gotten and
several bronze, but still the same rate from the Clinton era.
But regarding length. I started out in the Pleistocene writing a 1400 word
column for a Sunday metro. When it syndicated over three decades ago, many
of the papers wanted a 700 word column, so that is what I write now. I agree
that writing shorter pieces can be more work that rambling on in longer
pieces. When I have a topic that just must have more space, I do it in a "to
be continued" format, but I always make each piece of it stand alone.
