I agree with Sandie and Peter -- better to cut the piece myself than leave to an editor. As an editor, I know I prefer the writer cut the piece. If someone consistently sent me longer than requested pieces, I probably wouldn't use them as much...why increase my work load? Part of being the writer with a word limit is it gives you the opportunity present it the best way you can w/the established limits.
Judy -- I'm getting the same thing I've been getting for writing the weekly column since 1994. About 10 years ago, I asked for a raise making the arguments as you suggest, citing comments, letters, demand as speaker, etc., all to no avail. I wanted to go from $65 a week to $75 and you would have thought I was asking for $1,000 a column. Since then and seemingly continually, freelancers keep getting axed. The pay is particularly low considering how much more use the paper has for the column, printing it in metro regions, posting on the Web, etc., than in 1994. I now just try to stay under the radar.
