Re: Article length/pay

Once, in just a titch over 200 columns has my current editor asked me to shorten a piece. I did, willingly. I appreciated the reason he gave me- sold an ad, Dan- and the fact that I was afforded the opportunity to do so. (Mind you, I'm also cognizant that by sending it back to me with a 16-column inch limit, he saved himself a bit of work. Then again, he could have reached out to the wire and reeled in a perfect length piece.) Twice in just over 200 columns have I asked to exceed my agreed upon word count significantly (by about 400 words) in order to cover a topic in one publication. They did, without hesitation. Both articles were about attracting young people into horticulture as professionals.
I am very happy where I am now.

With a previous chain, my column was edited by earnest young people who had spellcheckers for assistance. Sometimes when they ran out of space they just stopped in mid-sente........... The upside of that paper was that I had a picture and a by-line. Small notoriety brought in a few other jobs. I rationalized that they were paying me to advertise myself at excellent rates.
