Re: Article length/pay

Two years ago Jeff Ball and I had our columns cut from 950 words to 450 words. It had nothing to do with our work or perceived value, the section went from 24 pages to as low as 8 as a result of lack of advertising. I try to reach both the avid gardener as well as the beginner, so it can be a challenge. The good news is I have become skilled at cutting out unneeded verbage and now it drives me nuts when I see it in print. Sooooo, it has made me a better writer.

I occasionally write for other publications and consider their word count requirements written in stone. In this climate, no editor I know has the time to rewrite articles. They may do it once, but you will be cut from their lists.

I have not received a raise in 12 years and Jeff was furloughed for 4 months this winter. My editor was required to take a month long furlough also. The good news is, as a result of a joint operator's agreement our Homelstyle section is delivered in both Michigan major dailies, so if one goes under we will probably survive :-)
