Re: weed removal by flaming
Hi, Sabine!
I've been using a torch for many years and find it most effective for cracks in bluestone and blacktop driveways where vinegar will stain. It's also excellent for use in gravel paths and the like. I sometimes use it in a garden setting but must be careful to have a heat shield so as not to burn adjoining vegetation. A handy hose or watering pail is a must for unintended flare-ups of close-by debris, especially under dry conditions. I never use it under windy conditions and in especially dry situations unless aforementioned hose is at the ready. It works very well to kill the weeds, roots and all from a standing position.
I also use it to edge paths and walkways when the lawn encroaches too aggressively. In this latter case, you can control the flame to "top burn" rather than root kill the intended vegetation. After you rake away the dead, burnt debris, you're left with a nice clean neat fresh edge.
