misinformation about AHS heat zone map

I had received an answer to my query about folks using the AHS heat zone map that said that AHS was about to discontinue its use. I checked with David Ellis and got this reply

Hi Cathy:

Nope, no such plans are in the works. We continue to sell poster-size copies of the map regularly by mail order and get a steady stream of requests from publishers to reproduce the maps in books and on websites. And heat zone codes are included in our most recent books, including the AHS Great Plant Guide (March 2011) and the AHS Encyclopedia of Plants & Flowers (coming out this fall)--and of course in The American Gardener magazine.

Once the USDA comes out with its updated hardiness map, I think it may spur discussion of revising and updating the Heat Zone map, perhaps using new technology to expand the parameters used to create the map. But of course the Heat Zone map's great champion, Dr. Cathey, is no longer with us, so one of the unknowns is whether new leaders from the scientific community will step forward to fill that breach.

If you'd like to discuss in more detail, I'd be happy to set up a time to chat with you. I'm working from home today, but will be in the office tomorrow.

Cheers,

David
