I agree that the Sunset zone map for the East is very inaccurate and hard to 
use. I have to convert it into USDA zones whenever I look up a plant. That 
said, however, the Sunset National Garden Book is my first go-to reference. 
About the same time they came out with a National Landscaping Book which is 
little different than all the other big format landscaping books. I tried to 
find out what happened to the roll out, which was obviously unsuccessful for 
unknown reasons. Several years ago I ran across this National Gardening Book 
remaindered at five bucks a copy and bought ten. I've given away all but 
two, one now coffee stained and kept as a back-up, one in good condition and 
kept right by my chair.
