Not an excuse for my beetles. I have worked so hard on my soil that in many 
areas of my garden I can stick the tip of a trowel into the soil and then 
push it in to the top of the handle with one finger.  I love to do that for 
visitors, who stare in amazement and go home with more enthusiasm for 
improving their own garden soil.

OK, so maybe sometimes when I'm expecting visitors, I do a tiny bit of spot 
spading. That's just between you and me. But still ...
