question about KnockOut roses and overwintering

Here in Chicago I've noticed that several KnockOut roses didn't make it
through the winter or, if they survived, they were badly hit and are
only 6 inches tall at this point. Has anybody else noticed this? We had
snow cover through most of January and February so I am really
surprised by this. My own KnockOuts survived (pink, red, double red)
but the original red suffered.
