I do this all the time (and even copy videos to my Blackberry for later
watching), but it's not a straightforward process because I use Linux.
For now I would recommend setting the program to never delete so that
you can deal with this at your leisure (nothing like having a program
deleted that you wanted to save because you ran out of space!)

What operating system do you use (MacOS, Windows, Linux, etc.)?
That will determine how you convert these.  Also, what model 
TiVo do you have?

I haven't tried this, but you need to make sure that you have a tuner
card in your computer first (wow, I put paranthetical comments in every
paragraph).
